A fear of anyone working on something new or unique is that someone else will succeed at that thing first, which is why I made this blog, to publish my intentions, goals, and work worldwide. In this way, I can be sure that I “lay claim” to Euthymius Zigabenus’ Commentary on Paul’s Epistles. Someone coming to this site might see that I have finished 52% of the entire translation and let me keep working on it without bothering to compete with me.

For those who do not have their own website or blog, there is another way to notify the wider world of a new translation or new edition of a work from the Byzantine Period. That way is through the International Association of Byzantine Studies. The Association has appropriated Alessandra Bucossi‘s list of translations and editions that she was maintaining for a number of years on a spreadsheet (see here for a version of that list from 2018) and made it into an official database.

When I begin translating a new commentary, I fill out the above form and add my translation to the database, thereby “laying claim” to the work that I have set out to do. Feel free to look for my name there; it appears four times as of this blog post.

I hope someone who has not heard of this list finds this revelation as useful as I did when I was first told about it. Or, at the very least, I hope that someone who has heard about it and has not yet decided to add their project to it finally decides to take the plunge like I did.
